TGS BRINGS INNOVATIVE SOLUTION
TO TXI CEMENT
TXI/Midlothian
Cement plant personnel asked TGS/Engineering & Conveying Systems,
a division of Trans-Global Solutions, Inc., to devise a plan to increase the
capacity of their four year old, two-mile long, quarry-to-plant overland
conveyor system, The construction of an additional kiln at the TXI cement plant
required that the capacity of the overland system be increased from 600 to 1600
tons per hour.
TGS
was confronted with several challenges. First the system had to be cost
effective. Secondly, the construction could not interfere with the operation of
the quarry or the supply of limestone to the existing four cement kilns. Lastly
the system had to meet TXI's high standards for quality, safety and
reliability.
Designing,
fabricating and erecting a complete new overland system would have been too
expensive, would have taken too long and would have disrupted the operations of
the quarry to a great extent. Together TGS/Engineering and TXI
operations personnel and formulated a unique solution to the challenge. The
decision was made to replace the existing 30-inch wide belt with a special 42"
wide belt at a troughing angle of 65 degrees with an increase in power to two
200 horsepower drives. This allowed use of nearly all of the existing conveyor
structural steel.
TGS,
with the cooperation of TXI/Midlothian personnel, was able to limit the "out of
service" time of the overland conveyor system to two and a half weeks, rather
than the months that a completely new system would have required. Trucking of
product only was required for a short time and impact on quarry and cement
plant operations was minimal. And the cost to increase the original capacity of
the two-mile overland system 266% was a fraction of the cost of a new,
conventional system.
