History

TGS, formerly Econo-Rail Corporation, began in 1978 in Port Arthur, Texas.

TGS CEO, William F. “Bill” Scott worked at a railroad construction and engineering business during his college years. After graduating, Bill drew upon that experience, and in 1975, he and his brother Dick started their own rail maintenance business with just $3,500 and a pick-up truck. From that humble beginning, the Econo-Rail Corporation was born.

The brothers quickly built a reputation for safe work practices, reliability, and quality workmanship and the company moved into its first formal headquarters on 9th Avenue in Port Arthur, TX in 1979. The business expanded naturally by responding to and meeting the increasing demands of their clients. In turn, the list of services that Econo-Rail provided grew longer with each new opportunity. The privately owned company eventually offered services including loading/unloading rail cars, railroad right-of-way maintenance, railroad design and construction, rail car storage, locomotive repairs, contract switching and locomotive leasing. Maintaining its focus on safety and service, the company continued to grow.

As it developed national recognition for dependability and efficiency, the company began to provide bulk material handling services; from deep-water terminals and barge services to contract operation of bulk terminal facilities for industrial clients including Shell Oil, Mitsubishi, ExxonMobil, Cemex, Lyondell Citgo Refining, Conoco Phillips/PDVSA (Merey Sweeny, LP), Vulcan Materials, Martin Marietta Aggregates, and Valero Refining.

Following international expansion partnerships with Mitsubishi and Cementos Mexicanos, the company became a provider of railroad and bulk material logistical services. At this time Econo-Rail Corporation outgrew its name and became Trans-Global Solutions, Inc. and its full service rail division became known as TGS.

In 2005, TGS sold its bulk terminal handling assets to Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (KMP) and began to develop new bulk terminal assets along the Gulf Coast. Since that time, TGS has continued to flourish and capitalize on new opportunities in the rail industry. This recent growth can be attributed to the leadership and direction of Bill’s sons, Will and James. After graduating from Southern Methodist University, both have joined Bill at the helm of TGS; Will Scott as President of Sales and Business Development and James Scott as President of Construction and Maintenance.

The TGS of today continues to maintain focus on safety and service. Providing a skilled, professional labor force powered by a fleet of over 400 pieces of construction equipment, trucks, and locomotives to efficiently, dependably, and confidently carry out any job. The company that began with just $3,500 and a pickup truck over 35 years ago now operates on a global scale. However, it is that humble beginning that reminds us daily of our responsibility to carry out our duties with integrity; for our customers, for the communities in which we operate, and for the families of those we employ.
