The American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) has recognized 16 member companies with its President’s Award for exceptional safety performance. Honorees were highlighted during the ASLRRA’s Fall Super Regional Meeting in St. Louis, Missouri, earlier this week.

The annual award recognizes short lines with the best safety performance in their categories, as measured by frequency rates for 2025 employee incidents per 200,000 hours worked. ASLRRA switched to a national, data-driven selection process this year, replacing regional criteria and balancing award categories through even percentile splits of eligible railroads. This method creates tighter, more competitive groupings, ASLRRA officials said in a press release.

ASLRRA this year also recognized standout performers among specific short-line groupings, such as the smallest railroads and switching operations, which have unique business models and operating profiles, they added.

“With freight-rail safety performance at an all-time high, these awards have never been harder to win,” said ASLRRA President Chuck Baker. “The President’s Award winners showcase the results of the ‘safety first’ mentality of railroading, practiced relentlessly 365 days a year.”
